Muscadine Grapes

MUSCADINE GRAPES

Muscadine grapes grow only in the South Eastern tier of the United States and are especially prolific in North Carolina. The hot humid growing conditions of those areas stresses the grape which in turn defends itself by producing a tough skin and grape seeds that are high in antixodant Resveratrol and other beneficial health related compounds. All parts of the Muscadine grape have value – the juice and pulp for a refreshing healthful drink and a good source of vitamin C, and the skins and seeds for the higher concentration of antioxidants.

Muscadines are an excellent contribution to wellness and to a disease prevention diet strategy.

 MUSCADINE GRAPE SEEDS

Muscadine grape seeds and skins are highly desirable as a nutraceutical source of antioxidants and polyphenolics.

Muscadine grape seeds and the skins contain the highest concentration of the phenolic complounds (Antioxidants) and the greatest ORAC capacity of the Muscadine grape as a whole. In fact, the total antioxidants in a grain of grape seeds is about twice as much as the grape skins and at least 30 times as in the juice.

The grape seeds also have a high concentration of Resveratrol, which is rich in polyphenols and antioxidants that protects against free radical injury at the cellular level.

MUSCADINE HEALTH BENEFITS

CLINICAL STUDIES are continuing to explore the many facets of the Muscadine grape and the benefits of Resveratrol.  Among the many attributes of resveratrol are the following :
  • increased longevity
  • a potent free-radical scavenger
  • a cardioprotectorant
  • reduces myocardial infarction injury
  • an anti-inflammatory agent
  • enhances anti-tumor and anti-cancer activities
  • inhibitor of platelet aggregation
  • as a phytoestrogen - natural replacement for estrogen during menopause
  • reduces risk of osteoporosis and increases bone formation.
In summary, these benefits represent the mechanics for developing many of the major degenerative diseases that plague our industrialized society.

DISEASES which have been linked to free-radicals :

• Allergies
• Alzheimer’s Disease
• Birth Defects
• Cancer
• Cardiovascular Disease
• Cataracts
• Crohn’s Disease
• DNA Mutation in Cells
• Gum Disease
• Hardening of the Arteries
• Heart Disease
• Immune System Decline
• Parkinson’s Disease
• Rheumatoid Arthritis
• Schizophrenia
• Ulcerative Colitis
FREQUENTLY ASKED QUESTIONS

What is a neutraceeutical ?
A neutraceutical is any substance that is a food or a part of a food that may provide medical or health benefits, including the prevention and/or treatment of disease.

Why are antioxidants important to us ?

Researchers have found that naturally occurring antioxidants found in fruits and vegetables—especially Muscadine grapes—provide the best source of antioxidants. Antioxidants are known as free radical scavengers help to reduce the risk of cancer and cardiovascular disease. They also reduce inflammation which causes joint pain and many chronic diseases.

Why is Resveratrol important to us ?

Resveratrol has potent antioxidant properties that make it effective against damaging free radicals with specific effects and protection of the cardiovascular system, blood and cellular structure. Resveratrol has also demonstrated reduction in inflammation effects while enhancing immune functions and reducing oxidative stress in brain cells.

What is ORAC ?

known as Oxygen Radical Absorbing Capacity—measures the antioxidant strength in foods and nutrients. The higher the score, the stronger the antioxidant capability. The chart below gives an ORAC comparison of popular juices available on the open market.
